Puerto Rico Fishing Seasons
Different species are available at different times of the year. The following is a per species list of what you can expect to catch throughout the year. Keep in mind that because of our warm waters most of the year, we can always be surprised by out of season fish!
The Blue Marlin run begins around the June full moon through the November full moon. The best months of the season are August, September and October. Our average size Blue Marlin is usually between 150-250 pounds. There are always some 300 and 400 pounders around. Some have been caught over 900 pounds. When fishing for Blue Marlin don't be surprised to find White Marlin, Longbill Spearfish and Sailfish. We fish for these on 30# and 50# stand-up tackle. Trolling artificial lures or ballyhoo are the most productive methods for hooking up with one these!
The Wahoo run begins in November and ends in April. The Wahoo here can range anywhere from 10 pounds to about 70 pounds. The average size Wahoo about 25-35 pounds, with several 40 and 50 pounders thrown in. Trolling for these with a little more speed seems to activate the bite. A line trolled in deep water off a downrigger usually hooks the bigger ones. We troll for these around offshore humps and drop-offs, always looking for clean, blue water. You can expect to catch Kingfish, Barracuda and Blackfin Tuna when fishing for Wahoo.
There are 2 Mahi-Mahi runs. There is one on the North Coast that runs from November through December. They are usually the smaller "peanuts" that can be found along weedlines and floating debris. The second run is on the South Coast and begins around February and ends in late April/early May. Mahi-Mahi on the South average about 20-30 pounds. You can usually pick up some 40 and 50 pounders, and don't be surprised to find 60 and even 70 pounders! You can find some on the West Coast, mainly following weedlines and currents. Due to lots of running and fuel costs, mahi trips we will only do on full day charters, plus a fuel surcharge depending on fuel cost.
Tuna can be caught throughout most of the year. Our most common tuna species are Blackfin tuna, Bonita and Skipjacks. Yellowfin tuna are sometimes around, but they are not commonly found. Blackfin can get to about 25 pounds and the Yellowfin have been caught up to 80 pounds. Tuna can be caught trolling, but the most productive way is drifting over ledges and humps using live bait such as sardines. When live baiting, we use spinning rods rigged with 12#, 20# and 30# line. Schools of tuna are often found around whale sharks, which is definitely a show not to be missed!

Fishing with Capt Pepi on Makaira Fishing Charters over the years has been second to none. From catching Pelagics like Wahoo, Tuna, Kingfish, Mahi & Sailfish. Fishing on the 35 foot Contender with twin Yamaha 300’s is sure to get you on the fish. Catching my dream fish, Blue Marlin, three in one day on an epic 24hr trip to Rincon will be with me forever!
I’ve been vacationing in Rincon for over 15 years now. We fish with Capt Pepi every time we go. We had fished with other charters but none compared. Capt Pepi is very personable and makes the day more like fishing with a friend. That being said, he can also find the fish. We have never had a bad trip. He will do what it takes to put you on the fish and make sure you have a great day fishing! I highly recommend him to anyone going to Rincon. Just go anywhere in Rincon and ask for Capt Pepi. He’s famous there.
First choice for fishing in PR. Great time the kids loved it and we caught some delicious fish for dinner!
A good bunch of guys took us to all the hot spots cut some mahi-mahi and had a great time on my vacation highly recommend these guys.
Recently took a half day charter trip with Capt. Pepi for tuna on light tackle for a bachelor party. Was everything we wanted to do and more. Very knowledgeable and had more tuna than we knew what to do with. Yellowfin and blackfin tuna and very enjoyable experience. Everyone caught something.
My family and I did a half day of fishing with Makaira a couple weeks ago and had a great time! Captain Pepi and his first mate were very helpful yet relaxed, which made the trip enjoyable. Along with keeping conversation with everyone on the boat they were also constantly checking different areas and communicating with other boats in order to find areas where the fish were biting. One of my family members started getting sea sick basically from the beginning of the trip but they never made him feel bad or uncomfortable. They offered suggestions to make him feel better, which, I’m sure would have helped if he wasn’t such a lost cause. But, all in all, it was a great trip. Along with a couple eel and a barracuda we caught a handful of tuna and a rainbow runner, all of which were DELICIOUS the next day. Would definitely do business with them again.
Capt Pepi in charge of the Contender. Beautiful fishing charter, professional Management responsible yet very friendly staff. Had a blast with a crew of 4, it is best fishing boat in Rincon as of today.
Capt. Pepi and his first mate, Greg, were knowledgable yet unassuming, talkative without being chatty, but most importantly, they found and caught fish. My friends and I booked a half day charter last week (Feb. 10, 2010) and landed a 60# Wahoo, a 10# Wahoo and a small Barracuda. If I ever make it back to Rincon, I will definitely be booking with Makaira again!
I just wanted to let you know we (My dad, wife Jeri, son Michael and his girlfriend Leah) and I had a great time fishing. I enjoyed our conversation about your boat and the dogs. I expect to fish with you again and am looking forward to the next time. Best of luck in your business…
Pepi, my family and I were on your charter the afternoon of March 13th and I just wanted to thank you again for everything! We all had an absolute blast! I also wanted to thank you for all of the suggestions you gave us for places to go and what to see… I look forward to doing it again!… I wanted to express my appreciation – thank you and I hope to see you again on a future vacation! Take care!
Hola- This is Ian, you took Mark, his brothers and I out fishing last Saturday, first off it was a f*@$*$@ blast-my first time ever fishing, and I loved it…
Could you please send me those pics that you took of the dorado I have been eating all week? Thanks Pepi.
Great trip fishing! Thank you so much Pepi and Chu for the nice trip. The hookups were fun and catches were memorable. I can’t wait for my next trip when I will have you take us out again – for sure!!! It was a perfect day and very affordable. Glad we found you.
Hello Pepi, Thank you for an incredible couple of days in the waters of Rincon. You run a first class operation and the hospitality of the people of Rincon makes for a wonderful experience. Please give our thanks to your friend that prepared the yellowfin tunas ( I can’t remember the name of the restaurant) for us. Those yellowfin on 20lb class were a blast. Daniel can’t wait to get back and the wives are already planning the next visit to do more browsing (shopping) at the art galleries around Rincon. David and his family were great and made our stay at Villa Cofresi very relaxing and enjoyable. Tell Chu your mate, that next time I will break his Puerto Rican record for the biggest Dorado. Thanks again.
We enjoyed our trip with you in December. Dave had told me about his past trips and how knowledgeable, efficient and courteous you and Chu are. You made me feel very at ease on the boat despite the fact that I was a novice at charter fishing. Seeing the island from the water gives you a completely different perspective. We plan another trip in December of 07 with Captain Dan and his fiance and we plan to book another trip on Fuakata! We appreciate your hospitality and the way you go above and beyond for your clients.Tight lines,
Just wanted to let you guys know what a great time we had. You made our first deep-sea fishing trip a day to remember! We enjoyed seeing the dolphins and pilot whales, and the black-fin tuna will be dinner tonight. Fighting with the 450 Marlin for 4 1/2 hours took it’s toll on all of us, but man, we got that sucker in finally, thanks to you guys. You run a first-class outfit, amigos!
Captain Pepi, I wanted to thank you guys for a great fishing trip. While most of our crew had never fished offshore before you took the time to explain what to do and how to do it. We all had a blast and dinner that night was excellent (Dorado and Tuna). Jeanine is still broken up about the one that got away and swears to return to get her revenge. Of all the Charters I have taken yours was by far the best. You delivered exactly as promised and the boat and gear was outstanding. I wish Makaira charters the best in the future and will certainly recommend to all that visit the Rincon area.
Pepi, Thank you for the awesome experience last week. We all had an absolute blast and I cannot wait to come back. My wife wants to visit her family in Puerto Rico on a yearly basis so I will definitely be booking with you again when we visit. The organized chaos when you have two Mahi hooked up at once (which happened twice) will be etched in my memory forever and I cannot wait to do it again. Listening to the scream of the drag when hooked up with a 40+ pound Wahoo was enough to get anyone excited. The fish dinner we had on Wednesday night was a hit with everyone. You run a first class operation and your first mate (Chu) did a great job of keeping the lines in the water and controlling the chaos on deck. Thanks again.
Pepi, I wanted to thank you again for an outstanding weekend. We all had such a great time with you and thought the entire event was top notch. We were all very bummed out leaving yesterday and to my surprise, all the guys would have been right back out there again for another full day on the water. I know it’s a long way off but I’m very serious about being back down there next Sept. Please keep me in mind when you get word that entry fees are being accepted. If you would have us again, we will be there. Thanks again Pepi. Speaking for all of us, we truly feel like we now have a friend in Puerto Rico.
I have fished with Capt. Jose “Pepi” Alfonso several times over the past four years. We had chartered other boats in the area, but once we found Makaira Fishing Charters we never went back to anyone else. With Capt. Pepi, we have fished for just about everything, Wahoo, Dorado, Kingfish, Tarpon and Marlin. I have never been disappointed. Capt. Pepi works extremely hard to put you on fish and also to make your trip as enjoyable as possible. My friends and I are avid fishermen where we live, and I am the owner/operator of my own charter business, so we know fishing. I promise you, Capt. Pepi’s operation is top notch. Not only is he good at catching the fish you are looking for, but he is very personable. This makes you feel like you are fishing with a friend and not just out on a charter boat. I would highly recommend, and have recommended Capt. Jose “Pepi” Alfonso to anyone going to Puerto Rico for fishing.
